A CLOSER LOOK
HOW WE HARDEN A HOME AGAINST WILDFIRE
Homes in the Palisades, Malibu and the hillside communities are built to California's Chapter 7A wildland-urban interface standards. Beyond the code minimum, we choose structure and materials that give a house the best chance of surviving an ember storm.
Structure and envelope
- Non-combustible structural systems where they make sense: ICF and concrete walls, structural steel, or fire-hardened wood framing
- Class A roofing, ignition-resistant siding and stucco, and metal or fiber-cement trim
- Tempered, dual-pane windows and doors with non-combustible frames
- Ember-resistant vents, enclosed eaves and sealed gaps where embers collect
Site and systems
- Defensible space, non-combustible hardscape and a five-foot ember-resistant zone at the walls
- Exterior sprinklers and dedicated water supply where the site allows
- Solar with battery storage so the home keeps running when the grid is shut off
