Guidelines for a Successful Remodeling Project

The most important factor in a successful remodel is the ability and experience of the contractor you hire to do the work. This will have the greatest impact on how well your project turns out. The other guidelines below will hopefully help you to reduce both the financial and emotional stress associated with building a new home or remodel your current home in Los Angeles. Please feel free to contact us at Addition Building & Design with any questions you may have.

  • Develop a detailed list of goals.
Ask yourself, “What about your current living space is all wrong and what is missing?” This will help you determine the design of a kitchen, bathroom or family area. Get lots of input from friends, contractors, family members until you really know what you want.
  • Prioritize your goals.
Budget, available space and the wishes of family members of all play a part in establishing guidelines and goals. Identify the truely important and review the list until everyone is satisfied with the plan.
  • Develop an accurate budget.
According to Remodeling Magazine's often quoted "Cost vs. Value" report, a full kitchen remodel in the Los Angeles area, for example, on average is likely to run between $40,000 and $90,000. Figure out how to finance your project and consult your accountant on potential tax benefits. Build in a lot of flexibility. get an estimate from a trustworthy Los Angeles contractor and determine the exact cost for your project.
  • Design help from a professional.
Seek the help of an experienced professional in architectural design. Focus your search on companies with specific expertise in kitchen design, room additions or new home design and insist they stay within your budget. This is a critical factor for a successful project.
  • Hire an experienced and trustworthy contractor. Find a Los Angeles builder that demonstrates abundant experience and expertise in the kind of work you need done. They must have an excellent standing with the State License Board and the California Better Business Bureau. Review their recent projects and call their references and then hire someone you can get along with as your Los Angeles building contractor. Also get the following:
    • A fixed price for your project.
    • A completion date in writing.
  • Manage your expectations.
Any kind of remodeling project is a multi-trade, detail-intensive undertaking. It involves noise, dust and disruption to the household routine. Be prepared for the inconvenience to last longer than you think it will.
  • Stay involved.
The golden rule is: “Do not expect—inspect!" You will have to live with the results of the project, not the contractor, so stay involved as the project progresses. All builders benefit from your ongoing input and enthusiastic involvement. If you choose your Los Angeles contractor wisely, your remodeling project may actually be a rewarding experience you will get to brag about.
